It’s hard to pare down your wardrobe to a “capsule,” especially in cold weather. When it feels like you need 10 layers just to make it through one icy day, how can you possibly create closet zen? The way I see it is, at the beginning of each season, it’s important to take out all the extras and start fresh with just the essentials before you build from there. Without a doubt, most women will stray from their capsule eventually, but it’s nice to have a solid base from which to work. If I don’t think about my closet in terms of a capsule, it’s easy to get off track to the point that one day I wake up and realize I have five NYE gowns, three pairs of cowboy boots, and not one pair of jeans that fit. If you take stock of your clothing and find more oddities than staples, it’s time to Marie Kondo your wardrobe and start over with the capsule-worthy garments below.

How to Create a Cold Weather Capsule Wardrobe

Neutral Wool Overcoat

Let’s start from the outside and work our way in. Coats are tricky and often expensive, so our advice is to do some research and treat yourself to the perfect one (and only one) this year. Shape, fit, fabric, and color all matter as does the way it buttons and feels on the skin. Pockets are a must, and not those lame faux-pockets because they do not keep your hands warm. A word of advice when building your capsule is to keep everything to neutral tones so that you can mix and match without worry. A light gray or tan wool overcoat will be a go-to that you can wear again and again for all occasions. This is an item worthy of a splurge if you can. A great classic, high quality coat will last you for decades.

The Perfect Jeans

I know what you are thinking: do they even exist? Jeans that fit just right take more energy to find than we care to admit. However, jeans are pretty special in that they really do go with everything and are super easy to throw on in a hurry. Plus, you don’t have to wash them after every wear, which is always a plus when your wardrobe is minimal. When in doubt, order a few pairs online expecting to return some of them. I personally love a traditional look, like Levi’s 501 jeans.

Just hearing the word cardigan makes me feel cozy. While I’d normally say the more the merrier, we are sticking to the basics that you build on. For the foundation of a capsule wardrobe, choose wisely in a neutral color like camel, gray, or black. Whether you prefer a chunky cable knit or a ribbed knit cropped version is up to you!

You don’t have to be gliding down the ski trails to appreciate a good turtleneck. They never go out of style and have that chic-meets-CEO vibe that makes them a hero piece in our book. Layer yours under a cardigan or wear on its own with dainty necklaces.

Black Suede Skirt

Keeping things streamlined and classic, a suede skirt is a versatile must-have that instantly pulls together numerous items from your capsule. For example, you can wear it with your turtleneck or your cardigan and can wear boots or heels, depending on the occasion.

Little Black Dress

Of course, if you are looking to transition your work attire to a night out, you can’t go wrong with the LBD as your foundation piece. As straightforward as it seems, it’s ever-flattering, versatile and you don’t have to worry about a thing because you’ll always be dressed appropriately.

Ankle Booties

There are so many styles of boots out there, it’s nearly impossible to pick just one. However, if you think about which will be the most useful, ankle booties win, no contest. You can wear them with jeans or dress them up with your suede skirt and a pair of tights.

Other than boots, a pair of heels for holiday festivities really gets me in the mood. Even for even socially distanced partying!. As you may be rocking around the Christmas tree for hours, be sure to put your best foot forward in heels that won’t hurt!

Neutral-Toned Bag

When it comes to bags, I love a light taupe leather for winter. It’s unexpected and fresh and can also be used in the spring. Right now, small baguette bags are in style and I just love fashion that reminds me of my favorite food, don’t you?

Black Tights

Last, but certainly not least, are black tights. The right pair will both keep you warm and be leg-lengthening with your skirt or LBD. I’ll be the first to admit that you may need more than one pair because you can’t outrun a run! Main photo by Amanda Vick
