When I’m missing the adventure of travel, I dive into a good travel book, look through old vacation photos, or settle in for a movie set in a faraway locale. Films can allow us to live vicariously through each marvelous journey portrayed. If you need an escape, these six travel movies are perfect to fill that desire, if only for an hour or two. Be warned: they may only fuel your longing for a getaway!

Travel Movies

Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

Walter, who thus far has led an adventure-less life is about to experience a change in the monotony. He yearns to escape his humdrum days and to find love and exploration, but settles for daydreaming to satisfy his longings. That is, until a work crisis tosses Walter into a life-changing journey and he finds himself globetrotting to save his job. This quest brings about a gradual self-transformation. The film not only encourages adventure but also captures the essence of not giving up. Walter persists while seeking a relatively unknown destination, leaping into ambiguity despite the predictable life he once led.

The Bucket List (2007)

An unlikely friendship is formed and dreams are cast. “Witness something truly majestic.” “See Rome!” “See the Pyramids.” These are just three of the 15 bucket list items Carter and Edward write down during their time spent in the same hospital room. When Carter discovers he has but a year to live, the two set off on a traveling escapade to fulfill each bucket list item. The film not only inspires adventure but also reminds us of the importance of family and the relationships in our lives. What would traveling be without companions and those we meet along the way?

Mamma Mia! (2008)

This movie will leave you feeling as if you’ve just returned from a Greek island escape. Sophie,a bride-to-be, has hopes to have her father walk her down the aisle. The only problem: she doesn’t know who he is. The young woman digs into her mother’s past and discovers three potential men who could be the father she seeks. She invites the potential long-lost fathers to her wedding AND THEN…. The story is told using popular songs by 1970s group Abba. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll marvel at the stark blue Aegean Sea in this whimsical film. You might also crave a new wardrobe inspired by the characters’ dreamy vintage style.

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Frances jet sets to Tuscany after she discovers her husband has been unfaithful. What she thought would be a brief excursion to get over her dilapidated marriage became a life-changing adventure filled with friendship and love. While the story of Frances’s journey is the main attraction, the beauty of Italy will truly draw you in. You may find yourself booking a ticket or searching villa listings in Tuscany once you witness its beauty via your screen.

Wild (2014)

Cheryl Strayed feels her life is in shambles, so she makes a profound commitment: To solo thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail. While Strayed, a native of Minnesota, spent her upbringing in the outdoors, she had no backpacking experience. Through her journey she learns the importance of determination and perseverance in the face of the many challenges faced on the PCT. This film will inspire you to seek refuge in the outdoors and fuel excitement for adventure in the natural world, which is accessible to all of us.

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Not unlike The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, this movie is about transformation. It’s based on the true story of Liz Gilbert who is seeking self-discovery and a new life filled with love. After divorcing her husband and leaving everything she knows behind, Gilbert embarks on a journey to unearth what is truly important to her. She finds herself experiencing the wonders of food in Italy, devotion and prayer in India, and a healthy life-balance in Bali. The enlightenment Gilbert finds is enough to inspire viewers to set out on their own exploration. The film challenges societal norms and the ideals of what one may consider leading a ‘normal’ life. It encourages soul searching through seeking out experiences that take you out of your comfort zone.
